where to go if i want to surf and spak spanish? - 2008/12/16 22:20 Hi

I want to go to a country where i can surf and speak spanish. I live in the dominican republic now and i learnt basic spanish here, but they speak funny spanish and a lot of the people here speak english so its hard to practise.

I have surfed for three years and like to surf point breaks and reefs.

Been contemplating Costa Rica, but i have heard people speak english there as well. I want to be forced to speak spansih cause otherwise im just going to speak english.

Anyone who knows of a perfect spot? It will be greatly appreciated

Re:where to go if i want to surf and spak spanish? - 2008/12/17 04:24 Go to a less touristy country in South America like Panama. Uncrowded sweet waves with consistant surf (so I hear, never been). Or El Salvador or Nicaragua. I think they speak spanish in these countries. And also, Spain, walked into that one a bit. Hope that helps

Re:where to go if i want to surf and spak spanish? - 2008/12/21 01:10 Greetings Ingrid,

I like your thinking because Costa Rica is where I live and been doing so since 2001. Ingrid in my experience, if you go to areas where their is no english speaking (i.e. your perfect scenario) you will lack your basic needs, as a westerner, unless you live as a local.

I also believe you make it what you want where ever you go. I speak both english and spanish here in CR but I can easily go for a week without speaking english to anyone. Also, no matter where you go in latin america you will find the spanish dialects are different, even within CR they have three types of spanish, nica spanish, campesino spanish, and tico spanish.

It seems like you are having trouble like all of us who learn spanish later in life and that is; thinking in Spanish. If you learn how to think in spanish, your speaking spanish will appear overnight. The first clue you have when you begin to think in spanish is you have dreams in spanish. If you still consider costa rica as a choice, I believe it is an excellent choice and there are many areas you can live where no english speakers are and still be close to the beach. Check out these sites for general information about CR and for surfing related information

There are many surf spots to choose from in Costa Rica and depending on your finances, there are many ways for you to earn a living here too if your lifestyle is not to demanding.

Re:where to go if i want to surf and spak spanish? - 2008/12/26 03:54 Hello, Ingrid.

I am from Spain. I guess Mundaka (Basque Country - Spain) is a great place for surfing, as well as other places close to.
