Surf trip description:

IN SEPTEMBER 2001 MY WIFE DAWN AND I WENT TO THE MALDIVES ON A 2 WEEK HOLIDAY. WE TRAVELLED VIA SRI LANKA (AGAINST THE THEN FOREIGN OFFICE ADVICE - DUE TO TAMIL TIGER FIGHTING IN THE REGION). HOWEVER, THE TAMIL TIGERS DID BLOW UP SEVERAL AIR LANKA AIRCRAFT AT COLOMBO AIRPORT.  THE RESULT WAS AN ALMIGHTY SCRUM FOR THE ONLY FLIGHT TO MALE THE FOLLOWING MORNING. AT MALE AIRPORT WE MET ANOTHER BRITISH COUPLE KAREN AND BRYAN. KAREN DID NOT SURF, SO THANKFULLY MY WIFE NOW HAD SOME COMPANY WHO WOULD NOT BORE HER SILLY WITH TEDIOUS SURFING ANECDOTES.

WE THEN JOINED A CHARTER BOAT (SURFBETTER.COM / NOW TROPICSURF) AND SPENT THE NEXT WEEK SURFING THE NORTH MALE ATOLL BREAKS, NAMELY SULTANS, HONKYS, COKES, NINJAS, TOMSTONES. EACH SESSION WAS PERFECT CLEAN WAVES, WITH WAVE FACES RANGING FROM HEAD TO DOUBLE OVERHEAD SIZE. WHILST AWAY AT SEA 9/11 OCCURRED (WHICH MADE GETTING HOME INTERESTING).

WE ALSO SURFED RIPTIDES AND NONYAS DURING THIS PERIOD, WITH SIMILAR CONDITIONS BUT SLIGHTLY SMALLER WAVES.

FOR THE SECOND HALF OF THE FIRST WEEK WE WERE JOINED BY A GROUP OF 5 AUSSIE LADS.  ALL WERE CONSIDERABLY BETTER SURFERS THAN BRYAN AND MYSELF BUT THEY WERE ALL GREAT COMPANY AND KEEN TO GIVE ADVICE.

WE SPENT THE SECOND WEEK OF THE HOLIDAY AT LOHIFUSHI RESORT, BEFORE RETURNING HOME.

I WOULD STONGLY RECOMMEND THE MALDIVES AS A SURF DESTINATION TO ANY LEVEL OF SURFER AND I WAS VERY HAPPY WITH THE SERVICE PROVIDED BY SURFBETTER.COM.  THE REEFS ARE NOWHERE NEAR AS SCARY AS BALIOR BARBADOS, BUT CAN BE AS DEMANDING AS YOU WISH TO MAKE THEM.

SINCE THE HOLIDAY WE HAVE VISTED PORTUGAL, MEXICO AND BARBADOS WITH KAREN AND BRYAN AND ARE NOW CLOSE FRIENDS. TAKE A TRIP YOU NEVER KNOW WHICH NEW SURF BUDDIES YOU MAY MEET.
