aah memories - Started surfing here 25 years ago and surfed all alone on weekends. can't imagine how it must have been during the week! Can't tell you how many long barrels I got unseen by anyone on my old Glen Row boxy finned thruster. We could leave our bags and lunch on the beach and big dune and not see a dark gentleman all day. I remember the first time our bags got stolen was in 1989 and we chased the offender but he got away. Would not try that today without a gun! Anyway, I think about Dunes daily as I surf my pathetic waves in my new home in San Diego. Funny surfing alone or with just a hnadful of guys out, for all those years we never once thought about sharks. Had an altercation one day with Davie Stolk, stupid thing was we were the only 2 out in pumping 6 foot waves. Saw him in Reunion Island a few years ago. Someone get barreled for me please cause it is not happening here in S.D.

one of the best beachies - go to dunes if outer kom is just not big enough.then make sure you put on booties,a hoodie,and then start heading down the beach towards where you just came from,kom.since the beach makes a bay, find a good angle on the wind,which should ofcourse be south east,and a good channel.paddle out.wait.let the first one go by and then go.if you don't remember at that point what is written here,then you haven't read this

Narly - I bodyboarded there a couple years back! It is an awesome awesome wave! As a bodyboarder who is always looking for a killer wave with power for huge airs and fat tubes it is the perfect spot. I only surfed it a couple times and was always very powerful and unforgiving! Worth the walk!

Not worth it! - This spot Dunes is definately not worth a go especially if you are visiting Cape Town. Too many Great Whites here and they do attack. 2 Attacks recently, 1 being fatal. Often bump people off their boards and generally harrass surfers. No help if needed as it's really far from nearest car park. Just too scary! Who wants to be maimed or die on holiday?. Best bet for surf nearby is Clovelly Peak, a world class A-frame beach break. Can be fickle but worth just hanging out there as it normally just turns on very suddenly and you want to be there before others are on it. It's a semi secret spot so no pictures are provided ,but beleive me it cooks!!!.

Attack - Another great white attack at Dunes. The guy is lucky to be alive getting outta there. Shame. Such a good wave, but I'm beggining to wonder if its worth the risk.

Dream On, if you think Dunes is Secret! - I grew up surfing Dunes, and now I live in Sydney! Met some old mates in Bali this year! It's kinda funny, there are so worried about, Dunes getting "discovered" by the world surfing media. Yes, Dunes is perfect, in fact it's the most perfect beach break I've surfed! Will it get crowded in the future, I doubt it! Dunes has always been a place for the hard-core only! The freezing cold water , very powerfull waves, and abundance of great white sharks see to that! Just put yourself in the shoes of an average australian surfer. Would you spend $2000 airfare, on the off chance of scoring some icy barrels, or would you spend $800 and live like a king in the warm water wonderland of Bali? Don't worry dunes will never get as crowded as Pipeline or Hossegar!

Condolences to Dave Bornman’s family - I didn’t know Dave Bornman, I am a fellow surfer who would like to express my sympathy and condolences to Dave’s family and friends. The spot he surfed is one of the most beautiful unspoilt wild places I have ever surfed. Next time I surf the Dunes I will think of him. I encourage all visitors to this website to leave a message as a mark of respect to Dave’s memory.

Sympathy - On Friday the 12/9/03 Dave Bornman died at this break from a Great White. I dont know him and read it off a news board, but as a mark of respect im putting this hear as a memorial.
