- What is the best time to go here during the summer time? Cause I went here two summers ago and found it very disappointing. It was right before a typhoon and the waves were real small and too close to the shore.

nan wan left side - i got some fun waves on the left side of nan wan beach. it was mostly sand with a reef and left-hand peeling wave that was chest-high & barreling up onto the beach. i had a lot of fun getting pits on my bodyboard. i think this spot is fickle though. it must've been high tide because earlier that day, it was almost flat.

nice place - stayed at fudog in nan wan, nice place, cheap rooms, you can dive there too. just ask for sammy and everyone knows him down there.

need some info - hi, i'm teaching in korea these days and have got some holiday time and am thinking of checking out taiwan for a one week surf vacation. from what i can see here the nan wan area down south looks like the best surf. is it worth it this time of year? anyway if i check it out, what i need is a cheap place to stay for the week near the breaks. any help would be greatly appreciated - thanks chico

This is but one place - This is just one place around here. I was here during cyclone (that's a clue) Ting Ting and Mindulle and to be honest this beach didn't really offer much, but that was related to swell direction more than anything else. JelaShui had waves of 6'+, Banana Bay had waves, a hollow 5' left just to the east of Queens Head Rock was unreal. Fengchuisha had plenty of waves too in the 4'-6' range, you just have to drive (hire a car) around to get to the spots. This was my first trip to Kenting and there are dozens of breaks, reefs, points, sand banks, you just have to explore.

With a map, and swell, and 3 coastal aspects (east, south and west) some place will be offshore. When I first got here it was blowing easterly maybe nor easterly, and Jelashui and Fengchisha along the east side were blown out but the south facing beaches were offshore. The beach along the Chalet resort was 4'-5' with peaks everywhere. You can get onto this beach (even though it is private) from the very eastern end behind Kenting there is a little car park and a temple right on the beach, you can get onto this beach from here. I am sure there are other places you can get onto the beach too. The next day when the winds turned southerly the eastern side was offshore and clean. At the base of Fengchuisha dunes there are dozens of reefs and sand bank setups.

You also need to checkout the beaches in the national park there are a couple of beaches in there to that have a couple of interesting set ups too.

G'day Sammy, Ann & crew - WE were there in August '04 and had a ball, friendly locals, Sammy and the crew next door, great accomodation at Hawaii Hale,thanks Ann,and the best Pizzas in Taiwan just down the road. Real funky place. Waves were .5 to 1mt and perfect peeling rights across a soft rock bottom. Watch out for the nuclear power plant and the jet skis. Good idea to bring your own board as the hire boards are pretty ordinary, but cheap. The crew in the lineup were all over the place but pretty friendly, its all in the attitude. We had a great time, thanks to all.

in need of info - Can anyone tell me what sort of boards to bring to taiwan. Also if anyone has any ideas about where I would be best off living in terms of proximity to a good spot I would appreciate it. Right now I'm looking at Ilan, Dashi, and Taitung. Where is best?

CONGRATS SAMMY!!!!! - Say hello to Sammy's neighbour on the longboard that thinks he owns the waves, but can't quite manage to turn his board yet! I can imagine its a full on gong show now with the rate Kenting is growing. Glad I've moved on to better places with bigger waves. SAMMY!I hear yer havin another kid soon!! Never heard of pulling out? Congratulations bro! I hope all is well. Best of luck to everybody back on the island. I'm studying in Cape Town for the next few years if yer keen for a trip.

The surf seen now - Well boys the seen at Nan Wan has taken aridiculous turn into madness in the water. With all the new set ups and hotels supporting surfing at this spot the weekends have been made into the place for all new surfers to go. On the weekend you can see about 30 to 40 kooks out in the water on a knee high wave that have no respect for other people or the break. Dropping in, accidents, and long boards are a common thing here. The wave itself is drpeciating by the day with shitty bar that still has not settled in the reef.Nan Wan has not broke once this winter and tends to get to fast at chest high. If you go out watch your head and be alert at all times. As a frequent visiter of this spot i,ve yet to surf it decent and have came out of the water many times ready to woop some ass. If your looking for quality waves turn back and go home because you won't find them there.
