Correction - It's Mount Maunganui... this wave is also known as Lake Maunganui. However it can get epec in the summer months... March or Feb especially! If its chop suey, check the main beach and its usually good in the blow hole. Puka mate!!!

Waves in July? - I will be in Whitianga in mid July. Any decent chance of scoring surf this time of year there? We will be comingto the Coromandel on our last night in NZ. How is Raglan in mid July. Is the wind constantly on it (onshore), or does it ever lighten up (mornings/evenings)?Any info would be appreciated!

Surfing Coromandel - I have been surfing the Coromandel for 15 years. As the website says.....it is inconsistent. When a cyclone swell hits, it is epic, and all the beaches pretty much pick of some of the swell. The better ones are Sailors Grave, Tairua, Whanga, but the others all have their charms. I would check the swell forecasts closely before planning a specific surf trip here. Plenty of other things to do both on land and in the water though. Gets pretty crowded over the public holidays in Summer, especially Xmas/New Years.
