Coming to Thurso for August - Hi, I'm going to be in the Thurso area for August 2013 so that I can do a work placement at Dounreay and surf in the area. If there's anybody who'd be happy to show me round a bit and/or rent a room in the area can you please email me on donaghydavid@hotmail.com or phone me on 07946847123. Cheers, David

Damn - Just been reading the posts here and all I can say is damn, traveling surfers need to learn some respect. No, I'm not a local of Thurso and in fact have never surfed there but I plan to in the near future. I can't believe some of the stuff I'm reading insulting the locals and being disrespectful. I've surfed in many places all over the world, in Europe, Hawaii and others and the number one rule is always respect the locals, if you do this, everyone can have a good time. There's way to much of a bad vibe in many surf spots now because of idiots like the ones on this forum.

whats going on up there? - easy. me and one other mate are getting the train up to thurso from london in mid-december, just as soon as our last papers are handed in for this semester. he's from argentina, im english, & we immediately bonded on the first day of our course when he walked into the lecture theatre wearing an uluwatu t-shirt (i'd just got back from lakeys). he wanted to arrange a trip somewhere asap, and i told him i was fed up with being disappointed with trips south west being consistently blown out. i showed him photos of thrso cranking and needless to say he's now super keen. looking at this board now though im having my doubts, seems to be a few bad vibes knocking around. could a genuine local tell me what the score is? i heard it was proper uncrowded, (bearing in mind i was last at lakey peak in peak season!) with a friendly vibe. if you give respect you get respect. im hoping that all i had heard before looking here remains true, as me and my pal could butcher a clean right!

bad vibes - what are you on about?!! yeah the local boys up here travel and when they pitch up in spain ,canaries, france, indo what kind of reception do you think we get?!certainly not the same vibe that we used to give to travelling surfers!!wake up man!now these same foreigners think they can come here and snake and take all the waves they like cause they are a little better...there is gonna be more agro up here you better believe that!and these fannies will be hounded out of town!

Locals - Just been up to Thurso, a great wave but bad vibes and comments from the locals, im wondering if they ever travel? If you want to live on a great surf break then you have to expect visitors, as far as i can gather most of the locals are not local either? Shame.
De Anonymous , 19-03-2009
- I can assure you the locals of Thurso have had nothing but respect from the the surfers who visit the town and look forward to their return. The previous comment is not representive of the locals at all and instead of whining should join in if up to the challenge.

kekwk - very possible that great white sharks have been in british waters but my guess is as good as anyones wheather any have been seen. or mistaken identities such as orcas at gills or something. plenty of seals up that way for sure and with the gulf stream im sure many exotic marine animals and fish have got lost and found their way up there. you only have to remember that a few stray turtles have ended up on cornish shores along with sun fish making appearences so great whites i dont see why not but i think its just a few rare occurences. mind you how long has it been since we just realised the visiting orcas, did they get lost then found the a great deal of food at stroma. i guess we will never know the true story as the ocean is a big place and nature has endless possibilities and secrets. none of us know the facts but id like to think they have been up there and personally i reckon they have after all they are just down in the med sea which isnt that far away

dffe - whats with this gaining thurso local boys respect. sure dont hassle or drop and show a little respect but no need to kiss their asses. im from thurso and i can tell you most of them are big headed wankers. and by the way it is true appart from the surf thurso is a shit hole and we probably are inbreds.

- Don't just respect the locals, respect the place. I'm a Thurso local, been surfing for 2 an a half yrs, only surfed thurso east 3 times because i can't get a wave ahead of visiting surfers. They are at a level above me and just position themselves deeper, take the wave, paddle back out and so it continues. Most of the visiting surfers who surf east just come up when they know a swell is arriving, surf for 3 days, then take off. without checking out the conuty, without getting the crack with the locals, then leave saying thurso's a shit place. This ain't sour grapes either as i'm a goofy and love lefts. Karma is real. Remember it.

respect the locals - The last comment makes me a bit sad. Hopefully disrespectful travelers are not the norm. As a frequent surf traveler i hope to me in Caithness this autumn, and would hate to see non-locals being hassly in the water. If the locals are still cool then it's a rare gift and you should return the respect double. Don't make it another Bali/Canaries/Maritius situation.
