To "fabo" - Yeah its man-made in a sense... Look closely at the Google map and you can see that they blasted a channel in the reef to build the ala wai yacht harbor. So thats how a perfect left was created.

Wave thugs don't get my respect. - Wow...what a bunch of crap. I surfed this spot and it was great, I went in with no attitude respected ALL the surfers out there and had no problems with anyone. Actually the best surfer out there was a chic...destroying all da boys.

Don't think Hawaii and your surf spot is the only place getting infultrated with mainstream public. My mountain and local lake is getting taken over too, as i am a semi-pro wakeboarder. Those guys piss me off too, but it doesnt mean I can go around acting like a thug, blaiming everyone else.

Grow up! I am broke too, but i am doing something about it...pick up a book and learn something. Its easy to blame everyone and act like a thug.

- I'm a Haole boy living in Hawaii for 10 years now. I got a good job, drive a nice car, make good money, all that shit. The "locals who's life I couldn't possibly understand", don't give me that horseshit. I grew up with my parents homeless living in a goddamn pickup truck, on welfare and working odd jobs moving from town to town till the cops kicked us out and sent us down the road to the next place. I just got lucky with an opportunity for education and ran with it until I got where I am now. Worked my ass off for it. Parents did too. But I see guys here, and back over there, who didn't have a chance, and are still working their ass off to survive on the street. I'm not better than you, and you are not better than me. Period. All that separates us is luck.

Black, white, brown, whatever, color doesn't matter. That's all pure bullshit. There are "locals" everywhere in the world that hate people who come from anywhere else, or are different from them, or have something they don't have. It's all the same shit, just with different actors playing diferent parts in different places.

So screw all that shit. Respect everyone, because sometimes you never know who you're messing with till they walk over and slit your throat without a word. Give respect to get respect. I will work to earn your respect, but you will have to work to earn mine, too. If you don't want it, than fuck you.

Intense crowd when it fires - Well said, Chinaman. I've never heard Bowls-reality put in such an articulate way before.

Anyway,

I've surfed this place off and on since I was 8 and am now 25. Take it from me people...I am native-Hawaiian and get the same treatment out there as everyone else. When good, this place has a pecking order like Pipe (and some of them in Bowls' pecking order are actually high up in Pipe's pecking order). That should give you an idea of the level of surfing you have to be at to get anything good. I wish I were good enough.

This pecking order doesn't consist of only locals (or even many Hawaiians), so cut the crap about discrimination, people.

Even if you rip, all eyes are still always on this spot, and it is simply too crowded sometimes (even ASP pros sometimes get frustrated out here.)

Unless you seriously rip, it ain't really worth it when it cranks. Remember though, THIS ISN'T THE ONLY SPOT ON THE SOUTH SHORE.

However, if you are a female, you may get waves if you give da crew a little 'massage' between sets, or flash them juggies! Kidding ladies, just an idea I might've tried if I were a female (just trying to be creative here...I don't look at women as merely sex objects.)

Ah, you meet nice local @ Ala Mo! - Ah, my dear freind below, you say nice things: "Locals have always been cool to me as I make sure I greet them, respect their rights, consider myself a visitor and cheer them on when they get a good wave."

"respect their rights" -- A yes, the right to bash in your windows and take all your stuff, as you have indicated.

"consider myself a visitor" -- how considerate. Be sure to prominently display the rental car sticker on your bumper, in order to pay the 'visitor's fee' as granted by 'local rights'.

"...and cheer them on when they get a good wave." -- My favourite! I'm sure they will enjoy the praises, the respect, your smiling face as a nice place to land a fist after you get in their way.

And remember, Hawaii has not undergone a social revolution. This is not NYC, and you will never really blend, given the time of day in or be accepted as anything remotely community. The real Hawaiian reality - all the struggling locals - live a life so far removed from your reality, dont even comment on what you think you know about them.

local scene - I surfed Bowls once with a friend that lived on the island for a couple of years in the Navy, no problem with locals at that time, good surf too. Surfed Maili Point same trip, all our stuff ripped off from rental car. Bashed in a window. Cop said it's normal there and we should stick to locations other than the West side for that reason but no problem surfing with the locals. Locals have always been cool to me as I make sure I greet them, respect their rights, consider myself a visitor and cheer them on when they get a good wave. Surfing etiquette is the same for most parts of the world and I agree though that the younger kids should learn from their elders. I surf HB all the time since I live in Cali and if you drop in on me or someone else you might get bashed there too. Remember we all have the same thing in common here, it's about enjoying surfing. Have respect for those around you, no matter where you are or live.

- hawaiians think they are pretty hard some of them are but the 15 year old kids at kaisers think its cool to beak because thats the image that hawaii has these kids think they have a rep to hold on to. if you notice the older hawaiian surfers are chill and only dish out disrespect if its deserved. to all you little kids you may have power in numbers because you surf with your older brothers but if my white tourist ass saw you talking like that on the street i would just knock you out kid. dont call people off waves or call people out for dropping in when they are on a hard earned wave of their own. makes me want to choke you out with your leash and leave you in the channel for the atlantis tourists to take pictures of your corpse. kiddies need to follow their elder surfers example and give basic respect to everyone, local or not!
