cuyagua - I was in cuyagua a few weeks ago (early october, 06). There was an okay place to stay called posada casa grande at the end of town, you can get there by bus to the square from el playon, then just walk up a few blocks. it was Bs. 35000 a night for 2 beds, a fan, and a screen with holes. There are a few other places advertising habitaciones too. Make sure to arrive on a weekend though cause the place shuts down and even the owners leave but you can make an arrangement to stay. The bad part was its a 30 minute walk to the beach on a road through the jungle and the bugs were pretty bad on the way back in the afternoon. Also, its hard to get food sometimes as restaurants are sporadic. The beach is beautiful, except for all the garbage left by weekenders, but the surf wasnt great... short closeouts, about 3 feet while i was there and a bit rocky. I wouldnt say this is a great place to spend a lot of time surfing but if you just want a super slow pace of life, and a nice beach to hang out, it might be good. The weekend was super crowded but no one in the week. If you really want to travel somewhere for surf and warm water though I'd say venezuela isnt the place to travel, try ecuador or peru. Email me if you want to ask more.

Lone girl travelling - Am loving the sound of Cuyagua but wondering how safe it would be travelling alone. Am hoping to get out to Venezuala Jan '07 for 2 months.

anywhere to stay besides camping? - I will be in Cuyagua in December. I lived in Valencia for a while and can't wait to go back. Now that I am a 'tourist' and no longer a resident, I need somewhere to stay in Cuyagua. Are there any hostels or places in the little town on the beach?

old cuyagua surfer - I now live out of the country but I learned to surf in Cuyagua between 1974 and 1979, after which I left the country.
I spent every weekend in that place, it was the coolest place on earth. There would at most be 30 campers spread out accross the beach, the vibe was awesome, and the setting completely surreal for someone used to urban living, total magic.
I just came accross these photos and the place still looks pristine, it brought many great memories back and made me happy to see the developers have not yet killed the place with condos.

wow - I was there for new years. Got it amazing. The swell was amazing. i was there for a couple of days. Take alot of food and beer. Also off spray for the mosquitos. But its a great place the crowds arent bad and well its like any other spot in the world if you go in the water acting like an ass and trying to run the peek well your going to get fucked and eat shit all day. The surfers in Venz. Are amazing really down to earth and cool. Take extra wax and T's or stickers to hand out and Bro you will make friends and your shit wount be jacked. Great place i just got lucky and caught it really good over head perfet rights and lefts with super fun tubes.
