What a cool little beach break - Jan 2010 - Our first time at Buffels, lucky us 'cos there was a good swell running. Far off down the beach there was a left that looked like it was going off. Just to the left of the car park was a left/right peak that looked kind of fun. Water was warm enough for baggies - always good news for a Cape Town ice breaker :) . So in we went - spent an epic 2 hours catching 2 to 3 ft rights that rolled off the sandbank. Warm and uncrowded, quick but easy takeoff, no major paddle back, friendly dudes in the water, no visits from men in grey suits, it was one of those sessions that we'll remember. (try Long Beach with 60 people out and 20 more at the Krans and you'll know what I mean).
Gotta say, that Buffels beach break is a fun spot !

De A Buff Local. , 21-05-2007

Lekker Buff - A quick run down of Buffalo Bay, it has many spots:Yonders/Whales - Beach break far down the beach towards Brenton, rarely surfed, always looks better than what it isMurphs - mainly left beachbreak, most consistent spot surfed at Buff's, breaks off a few submerged rocks, can get super fun. Bowls - mainly left but requires a lot of sand to work, odd day can get good longish right into Murphs, nice on a fish board, left used to get goodish at one stage.Beachbreak - beginners only, close-out 2 ft slop, never gets any bigger.Reef right - good flatish beginner wave in front of the break-water, caught my first "face" of a wave there. Reef left - a funish summer wave, had a barrel here before, snuck in under the peak, no jokes.Rock - illusional, looks hectic at take-off but suddenly becomes a flat wave, paddle-skiers only, breaks far out off a rock at the back of Reef, hence the name.Point - fun hot-dog wave when small, with a 6ft east swell it gets mildly good, my favourite spot by far.Opies - bank dependent but get good waves when it works, rights and lefts.Wildside - long stretch of beach, rights and lefts, shories, the works.Wildside Corner - bank dependent right hander off the rocks running into shorebreak.Fish Boma - mainly a right hander off a rock boil, and very sharky, just ask Ross.Rivermouth - Classic, but lank sharky, peaks tend to shift a lot so even though its cooking people rarely surf it. Sometimes not worth the hassle, been chased out many times from seeing a shark. Please feel free to add to, or correct, the comments. I have been very vague in my descriptions, for example the Wildside can be broken down into about 5 different spot names. Plus some old locals use different names than what the new generation use. For example: the centre peak at Wildside used to be called Made-a-by, but some now call it Bert-Rock after the rock boil the peak breaks off. Then past Rivermouth you get Oyster Banks, no one knows about, only the older, more hard-core generation mention it, like Andy Marr, Clayton and Charles.

De A Buff Local, again. , 21-05-2007

Lekker Buff - Yes, i might have mentioned the endless cutback a few times in my previous post, but on a positive note i was back home recently and i had some very good surfs, especially at the Point and Wildside. Surprisingly there were many consistent east swells during the Feb/Mar07 period, not forgetting to mention the warm boardies water. I will always call myself a Buff's local, even though some newish locals never recognised me as growing up and surfing the Buff. Glad to see that Buff's still has the best vibe, the local's are always blissful and chilled.
