 Informações suplementares

Long stretch of beach break that can hold more size than the Ocean City breaks. Watch for rips in heavy surf. Mushy outside takeoffs that turn more hollow on inside sandbars. Great when on. Blows out easily on any easterly winds.

Ambiente

The most beautiful beach in an otherwise ugly stretch of coastline. Wild ponies and deer roam the park, often on the sand. Pristine. Best in fall after Labor Day when the hordes of beachgoers have gone home.

Geral

A great retreat even if the waves are crappy.

well... - Assateague will break, sometimes. But don't show up on a potato chip and expect to get a lot of waves. The reason is there is a LOT of water there. Most people ride LB's because the paddle is huge. When there is a swell, the paddle is the crowd control. We usually see a lot of guys standing on the walkovers pointing etc. and walking down to paddle out. But on the good days they just don't get outside the sand bar. This is true especially in winter. Add 5mil to your paddle and "poof" you'll wish someone else was surfing with you. If you go you'll notice there are groups of Assateague Island Regulars, you'll know them, they take all the good set waves and will snake, drop in and otherwise treat outsiders (and each other at times for a laugh) with utter disrespect and contempt. I've been surfing there since 1996 when I moved to the area from NJ. Its funny sometimes it is the most friendly surf with people you know, then the OC and DE guys show up and everyone gets all hostile. I love it!

Urban legend at best - Flat waves, flat beach, angry locals and unfriendly law enforcement. Occasionally every ocean facing beach gets waves but to consider this a surf destination is sad. Ocean City Md. 30min north has a much better set up for weak Atlantic swells to form into rideable peaks. During the residual swell left over after a Northeaster or Hurricane, Indian River Inlet DE is the place to go.
Assateague has beautiful pristine beaches and wildlife to marvel at, bring your spotting scope and camera but leave you quiver at home.

Hurricane Bill Session - Surfed the southern part of the island durring hurricane Bill swell directly out front of the Chincoteague parking lot. There are basically three sand bars on an overhead++ swell. Outside, middle and shorebreak. Saturday at low-ish tide was out of control. Peaks shifting everywere but nothing lining up. No one out. Sunday morning the swell had dropped by a foot or two. Still solid overhead. Tide was probably 3.5 ft going to a 4.5 ft high in the next hour or so. Much improved! Predictable peaks. Bombs hitting the outside sand bars and lining up. Only lasted for about 30 minutes before the tide got too fat. Should have shown up an hour earlier. 15-20 guys around the main peak in front of parking lot 1. 3 guys infront of parking lot 2. When the tide hit its peak the shore-pound was super fun to body womp.
