 Informações suplementares

This is an incredibly lame wave that occasionally has displayed greatness out of the lucky combination of wind, swell, sand, and God smiling down on the locals.

One of these most memorable sessions was an Easter weekend way back in ?89 (or was it ?90) that displayed just how good this wave could get, before reminding you that you will be old and grey before you see it like this again??

More famous for the surfers that live here ? members of the PST (Point Surf Team), and the notoriously shifty Schaffer surfing dynasty. Many of which have proved to be serious competitors in South Island and New Zealand surfing circuits.

Ambiente

Slightly sheltered by the relentless North Easterly and Easterly winds that plague Christchurch throughout the summer. Scarbourgh can offer faces that are a little less chopped up in the big North wind swells that roll down the coast ? sometimes breaking up to 500 metres out in bay clogged with sand. Wave faces that in fact can be incredibly big considering how gutless and weak they are, reforming several times before finally giving up ?the dead donkey? on the grey sand and breakwalls that protect the esplanade.

Geral

A great place to grow up as a little grommet, riding the reforms, and bouncing off the white water, before becoming disheartened with the fact that your local wave is never going to live up to those posters of barrels and steep faces that cover your bedroom wall.

Pollution - Yes - Everytime I surf on either Scarborough or Brighton now, my hands and feet peel and I feel quite out of sorts for a couple of days. There is something going on out there, and its not good. As regular surfers, we need to start some sort of affirmative action on this shit - what ever they are pumping out the estuary - its bad. This town is filled with some real arseholes, as we all know, and they wouldn't give a shit about anyone except themselves...

heavy - Scarborough is without doubt the heaviest wave in NZ if not the S Pacific. I did not realize that mals were so good in stand up bazzas, make a mistake on the drop and you are in for a drumming you will not forget!!

polluted water I think - been out a few times here and everytime I feel sick afterwards for a few days; I think the water is a bit polluted (like Sumner), hence the safety signs I guess. Maybe ok for some with higher tolerances for such things. Also, please guys grow up stop swearing and getting at each other etc. Yes Scarbs is a week wave etc, but can still be fun to some who may only want an easy time out there. I'm newish to the scene here and have tried Scarbs when is too big and messy at the other beaches to do anything but still wanted to get wet. I wouldn't expect to catch epic waves there. Lot of people will still find fun (longboarders especially).
