Disappointing - I rate Anclote 3/5 for it’s performance on waves chest high and above. However, you aren’t very likely to get waves that size. It does not pull in swell. During the week we were there, the forecast showed 3 – 4 ft waves out of the SSW. It was breaking head-high at points to the east and west, but Anclote dribbled in with slow, weak, knee to thigh high waves on most of the sets, completely flat in between. On one afternoon session, when the forecast called for 5ft waves, there were occasional chest-head high waves, which did deliver very long, longboardable rights.
It is possible to go a mile east to get bigger waves at La Lancha, or west to the point El Faro, but it’s too far to walk with a board, especially over the rocks and cobblestones to the west. Accion Sports will take you by boat, but it’s $30 per person, way too much for multiple sessions. Taxis can take you to La Lancha (not El Faro), but it’s hard to find, and good luck getting back.
To make matters worse, Anclote is dominated by SUPs. It’s a good spot for SUPs, for learning and for advanced SUPers. There are several places right there that rent them. That makes catching waves on a surfboard very difficult, even on a longboard. When decent waves are few and far between, every one of them will have a SUP on it, and they are particularly aggressive there.
Punta de Mita is a very nice place to visit. Surf will be disappointing, unless you have a consistent 4ft+ SSW swell, and get lucky with few SUPs.
