about as "local" as it gets - First of all, you have to trek to Monterey (who really goes to Monterey, except central Californian winos)...then you gotta drive all the way around the point with all your 4/3 suit, hood, booties and maybe even gloves (depending on how acclimated you are). The water, however, is as blue and clear as Tahiti and the wave is kind of a reef/right point break setup. It's far from warm, though.

Sharks - I've been surfing this place since the mid 70s. Had 3 major Great White experiences here in the early 80s. I was the last person Lou Boren talked to before he was killed by a Great White. I surfed here 2 months ago and it still spooks me. Make sure theirs at least 10 people out to better your odds lol.

Current - Everyone says the sideshore current here is bad, they are all right. I paddled and paddled away from the rocks and basically stayed in one spot, the cold water doesnt help either. it was head high + when i was there and I can only imagine what its like when it is bigger. My little cousin got stuck out and I had to go rescue him, not a spot for the por paddler or poor swimmer, so be careful out there!

juicers only - This beach break serves some up, thick pits, always bigger than looks, water is probly below 50. Grumpy old dudes and ego maniac mediocore surfers "rule" this spot. Still a fun choice if in monterey. Just don;t paddle out on a longboard, i saw a bitter old man kick someone out of the water for it.

Attention !! - Asilomar Beach is not a place for beggining surfers. There are rip tides sudden sneaker sets and the surf can rise rapidly without warning.Very dangerous surf spot.Novice surfers should go to del monte beach or santa cruz. Also the water quality is bad here giardia hepititus sinus and staph infections have been on the rise.

No More Parking - Thanks to Ryan of Coasting for all the print on Asilomar.
Now,if I can find a parking spot,I get to pull kooks out of the rip.How about giving Del Monte some press,Asilomar could use a break.

asilomar - i surfed asilomar for a couple of years because it was only a mile and a half away from my house. its not the best spot in the world but in can hold at 10 ft easy during the winter. the best time in my opinion was late summer and of course winter, but spring sucked. constant onshores made it impossible to even get out, even using the channel by the rocks at the near side of the beach. however during the summer it can glass out pretty nice. just go at low tide, walk the rocks out, hop in the channel, then swim out laterally a bit and you're lined up. spanish bay shares a point with asilomar that can be a good long, big right during the fall and winter. just be careful surfing spanish bay because it can jack up out of nowhere on you.

Fun spot - Those submitted pictures are of Spanish Bay, not Asilomar!
Yes, SB is where Lew Boren was attacked by a great white, estimated at 18' from bite marks & yes, the fish in Jaws was about that size. Asilomar is great year round. There are several points to ride. Locals are bit bitchy sometimes. There are water quality issues too because some old river runs into it. Never stays the same. There are tow ins sometimes in the winter when there are 25' waves.

a different breed - I've taken a yearly trip to asilomar for some time now(actually sometimes I bring a gal if I'm lucky enough to have one at the time)... and for you self-proclaimed owners of asilomar (ahhh, who am I?... I'd probably do the same thing), don't worry, when I tell my buddies I'm going up north, I leave it too vague for them to figure out my destination since I too love uncrowded surf (example: "I'm going to 'central cal', you know the santa cruz area!"... sorry santa cruz!). I surf some of the time, but spend most of my time watching the energy of central coastline. I got to hand it to you central.. and northern cal surfers... you're a tougher breed of surfer -- tougher in the sense that you can have great fun in those frigid waters and the overall unforgiving conditions (and although he rarely shows his aggressions to surfers, I know you must have whitey in the back of your minds from time-to-time; I know I do when I'm there). From time-to-time, I meet central/northern cal surfers down here in a southern cal lineup (you're usually the ones "not" complaining about the water being too cold!). Not too much power surfing down here (more of the "board-flicking"/"arial-artists"). I'm not big on "tricks" (in my humble opinion, tricks are for kids). Nothing beats drawing loooong clean lines. god bless/buddah is great/alla is king/whatever (i feel bad about it but i don't really like jews; I know there're plenty of nice jews around, and I try to convince myself that they're good people, but its hard (may be not a problem up there). the middle east hates us because for some reason that no one can quite pinpoint, we've been helping isreal fight that stupid religious war; and surprise, surprise, now we're being subject to terrorism by a bunch of looney religy-freaks. we need to let isreal fight their own damn war. wow, i really went off on a tangent there, eh? sorry. I'm tired of writing. peace.

asilomar locals - There aren't too many; but from my experiences surfing asilomar, they good guys. If you're friendly, they're friendly, etc. But as with any new spot you surf, an honorable man will always show a friendly attitude regardless as to how many "locals" there are... or how "tough" of a reputation they may or may not have. None of that crap matters. If you're friendly / respectful, expect the same back (but nothing less). No one will ever own the ocean.
