in SD in August- surf camp for adults? - I'm going to be staying in San Diego in early August with a friend, and want to spend a couple days at the beach catching some waves while my buddy's a work (sucker). I'm still a beginner. Does anyone have any ideas for a place I can go, maybe get some instruction + a board, and be around some other chilled out peeps, who ideally are also beginners. Like a surf (day) camp for adults maybe? don't know if such a thing even exists...

Beaches closed - Several miles of coast in California have been closed after a 66-year-old man died in a rare shark attack. David Martin was bitten as he swam in the Pacific Ocean off Solana Beach, 14 miles north of San Diego. The retired veterinarian was training with a triathlon team 150 yards (137m) offshore when he was attacked across both legs before the animal swam away. He was carried ashore and taken to the Fletcher Cove Park lifeguard station, but was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials cleared all beaches within a 17-mile radius of the attack. 'Get out of the water' Beaches will be closed within eight miles of where the attack took place for the weekend. The mayor of Solana Beach, Joe Kelleejan, said: "We are very concerned about public safety, we are wanting to make sure everybody gets out of the water, not only on Solana Beach but in the surrounding area. The shark is still in the area, we are sure of that." The shark was "probably" a Great White Shark, officials said. Shark attacks are extremely rare: since records began in the 1950s, there have been only 11 fatal shark attacks off the California coast, according to the state's Department of Fish and Game. Worldwide, there were 71 shark attacks recorded last year, of which only one was fatal.

San Diego tourists - I would fully recommend coming to SD for the summer, its crowded with hot chicks, and has a party atmosphere, we have beautiful weather. Surf wise... Its not the time to come. All of our great breaks are crawling with dorks and summer surfers. The surf rarely gets overhead. Its not worth it for the surf... Travel to indo for some excellent summer surf, our sumnmer is their swell season, although watch out for terrorists that wanna cut your head off, and banditst that will jack you and leave you for dead.

San Diego = meh - If your a tourist I wouldn't bother with anywhere in California. It's crowded, and people have bad attitudes, that goes for San Diego too. Personally I would go down to Mexico where the surf is just as good with half the crowds. I know that's what I do.

Orange County - Picks up better surf in the summer than LA or San Diego as the beaches face more south (bar the northern LA beaches like Malibu which also pick up good summer swell) but San Diego is much better in the winter. Orange County is awesome from Seal Beach to Trestles in the summer, and the water is as warm as it'll get in CA in the mid-high 60s in the summer (18-20 degrees C)

aam.. beginner :). - Depending where your surfings (Tourmaline) there are those that will offer you tips. There are a lot of locals that can’t deal with the fact the secret (San Diego) is now the best place to live. Add to that the traffic and crowds at the beach most surfers who would soon see you drown or get eaten by a shark then say hi to you. So if someone gives you a tip, it just might be me ;-). Late……………….
