Surfing On Vandenberg AFB - Hi guys, we have a Private Organization on base that we recently established called the "Waterman's Association". We are not the other surf club that people are referring to in this thread but we don’t jump on the band wagon to bash them either. vandenberg surf - I worked on base and have been in the surf club for eight years at vandenberg. The boathouse is a good spot but dont try to surf it, they will turn you in to the base cops if you are not in the club. All the air force guys that try to surf suck, but there is a few of us that work on base that can surf pretty good.

Vandenberg - Even if you did have base access and were a member of the surf club, it's really not that good. Surfing north of Point Conception pretty much sucks most of the time in the winter. If the winter season were (on average) 6 months, there's probably less than 10 really good days where everything comes together - swell, tides, and (most importantly) wind. The onshore flow starts up around mid-morning and doesn't let up until dusk, and some days it just blows all freakin' day. You have to be on it really early to get halfway decent conditions before the wind comes up and blows everything out.

There are alot more breaks on Vandenberg than those mentioned here. And Purisima Point isn't that good a majority of the time. If it's big, it's freakin' crazy out there because the point is so exposed. If it's medium-to-small there are better places on base.

The beaches are heavily patrolled not so much by the base cops but by the Federal Game Wardens who work on the base. A majority of the coastline are native habitat for the Western Snowy Plover, which is a Federal Protected Species so they are really sensitive to human contact and use of the beaches on base and at Surf (the public access beach between north and south base).

The surf club are pretty much nazis, as other people have mentioned. What a bunch of dorks. They like to sit around in their meetings and talk about surf and who did what and when, and you think to yourself "Wow, these guys must be good they surf all the time in uncrowded conditions..." Then you see them in the water and you think to yourself "Wow, these guys suck..." There's 2 guys that are really good surfers in the club and they are the most low-key guys. The club is so paranoid about exposure that they don't even advertise themselves to the rest of the Vandenberg base community because they don't want other people on base to find out about them.

I am in the Air Force and was stationed there from 1996 -2003. I even joined the club for a little bit and went to their meetings so I could surf on base. I got so fed up with the stupidity that I ended up getting in my car and driving to other spots just to surf.

I will say this, when there are gigantic winter swells (like 17+ at 20 sec.), there is a humongous right that freight trains all the way around the point outside the boathouse that is a better tow-in wave than Mavericks. I don't know exactly how big it is because there's no frame of reference that far out, but it peels forever and never breaks in front of itself. And it's about 1/2 mile out in deep water.

If you can access Vandenberg legally, Wall Beach can be surfed by anyone. Best season, I think, is summer on a south swell. The beach breaks and sandbars are more manageable. Of course, that's the height of the snowy plover season, so if there are too many violations the beach will be closed and even it it's open it's heavily patrolled so you don't want to violate the rules for beach access by walking on the parts of the beach that are off-limits. Wall Beach in the winter is too crazy on everything except small days. When it gets big it's hairy and the current will blow you north so fast you won't even realize it until you're getting pushed into the cliffs on the northside of the beach.

boat in - get yourself a nautical chart and you will see restricted waters off military bases, you and your boat must be offshore 500 yards or some distance at all times. Also theres times when the waters are completely closed for launches. Even Jalama gets cleared out. That said, the coast guard will tell you the same but by that time you will have caught some waves. Flying an American flag on your ship might help the guns understand you come in peace.

Purisima by boat? - After reading all the messages about how to get access to Purisima and the rest of the surf @vandenburg, I still have yet to find out if it is legal to surf point purisima by boat. Does anybody know for sure, whterh it is legal or not to boat in to Purisima nad the other spotsi nthe area. I have looked at the coastline with google's sattelite imagery and the potenial looks promising. Don't reply if you are unsure.

Seen it from Amtrak... - Yep, it is most definately a sweet spot. I was heading down to S.D. on an Amtrak from San Luis Obispo a few Winters ago and saw it totally crankin! I thought I was the only one who knew Vandenberg had a killer spot. It was going right and real big and hollow. Not a soul out. Oh well, just scoot down to Jalama and get just as tasty waves. I am a vet(93-96 Army) and used to take my old truck out there just to check out the ocean too. Never so it go off like that though. I have my old military I.D. Another spot on Vandenberg periphery is Silo's. You get there from PCH at the South end of Guadalupe. I know every inch of the central coast. Grew up there and once I got a car me and my budz just cruised all over (baked) and surfed.
