- Great wave, I surfed it last week 4 times, August 2007.
Found the current very strong flowing in the direction of the wave. Hard to paddle back to the take off, better to walk back and jump off the rocks. The last bit off the road has deep sand, give it a good run up. The budget fiat rental made it.

bad water - i only surfed here a couple of time and foun d it a pretty intense wave, heaving up fast and running right down the rocks. on the whole an exciting wave and not to be missed.. go in off the rocks and come in round in the bay.. i found the water quality very very bad on the second occasion, maybe flowing up from malibrigo (not sure how far it is)... there was a small wreck on the reef but not enough to totally steep the water in raw SH1T

access - Watch the bottom of the car if you are in anything other than a 4x4 - we holed the fuel line of our VW Golf, not fun repairing that on the Pan Americana with duct tape...

cool place - This place is real cool. The village isn't totally abandonded - we got stuck in the sand and as we were beginning to despair a couple of fishermen in rags appeared out of nowhere and helped us out.

I know that crime happens in Peru but to be honest we never saw anything that would suggest it or met anybody who wasn't top dollar. Awesome country and mind bending surf.

strongest wave of the northern Peru.... - I was there on last april, we went there when chicama was with 3 feet wave and pacasmayo already 6 feet, so.....i think poemape is the most dangerous wave at malabrigo puerto, the wave shakes a lot 'cause of the wind and sometimes the tide show you the rocks so close to you , and it's impossible surf after 1:00 pm ......and be carefull about robers....you must go home quickly after surf, don't waste your time at that "ghost town" it can change your plans, a friend of mine was kidnapped for 03 hrs untill the guys stop to ask him about something in spanish that he never know what he was talking about......be carefull too at puerto centinela...the same happen with a spanish surfer there.....in april too....

Works just fine right now! - Surfed Poemape yesterday, 10 Feb. 2003. Great wave! We stayed in Pacasmayo and rented a car and driver in Pacasmayo and left at 5.00 AM (15 USD). We arrived at Poemape at 6 A.M. and untill 8.30 there was nobody out but us 4. Two perfect sessions. Probably a good idea to camp here for a while to get good surf every morning.

Been a while - I first surfed Peomape in 1989...small but excellent, then again in 89 and 96...haven't been there in a while. The sandbars may be screwed up, it is a pretty exposed spot and bit NW swells do punch holes in the bottom making for mushy and junky surf. But like all sand points it will make a comeback. Cerro Azul went through 3 years of misery and now is on the mend.

what is going on with Poemape? - I have surfed this spot several times in the last 20 years of surfing. But for some reason in the last 3 years this wave is not working as it use to. Now it is more unconsistent, mushy, does not connect fully. I remember thos old days when it was overhead, truly powerful then...,
May be it is pure bad luck,...pacasmayo has benn working better lately...

we got stoked - we camped there in 95...we didnt here about this spot till we got there./ we checked out PACASMYO FIRST....but we ddecided to go out a check it out anyway...its alot bigger than it looks from the rocks....it was kind of like a humboldt county wave (where i live).fast ,burgery yet powerful.we decided that it would be better if we camped there... we were stoked for a few days...then our friend Oswaldo came to pic us up again...we were glad to have found that spot... im surprised that its on the net...i gues thats what poulation will do to a secret spot...
i hope other surfers go there and get stoked.....give the guy some boose there.......
